Founded in Florence in 1860, Panerai began as a watchmaking school and workshop, eventually developing precision instruments for the Italian Royal Navy. Known for their oversized cushion shaped cases, robust construction and superior legibility, Panerai watches have earned a cult following worldwide.
Panerai’s journey into watchmaking history began in earnest when Guido Panerai, grandson of the founder, invented 'Radiomir', a radium based luminescent paint that made underwater navigation tools visible in the dark. In the 1930s, the brand was tasked with producing watches for navy divers that could function in extreme low light conditions. This led to the creation of the first Radiomir prototypes in 1936, powered by reliable Rolex movements and tested by the Italian Navy's First Submarine Group.
Panerai continued to innovate with the introduction of 'Luminor', a tritium based luminescence that replaced the dangerous radium compound. The launch of the Luminor range introduced the brand’s signature crown locking mechanism and fixed lugs, giving rise to one of the most recognisable silhouettes in luxury watchmaking. The Egiziano, created for the Egyptian Navy, and the prototype chronograph Mare Nostrum further defined Panerai’s tool watch credentials.
It wasn’t until 1993 that Panerai made its civilian debut, with limited runs of the Luminor and Mare Nostrum. The bold styling quickly gained attention, and in 1997, the brand was acquired by Richemont Group, helping Panerai expand its reach globally. Today, Panerai watches remain instantly recognisable and revered for their unique blend of military functionality and striking design.
